No water in Valencia, Bacong and Dauin

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

I just had this news on my screen and I think I need to share it…

this is the original source: ABS-CBN

At least 13 villages in Bacong and Dauin towns in Negros Oriental have been waterless for the past couple of weeks after landslides destroyed their water system.

Local officials said landslides due to continuous rain destroyed 14 water pipes in the town of Dauin while five others were damaged in Bacong.

They said thousands of residents have been having difficulties in their water supply since the landslides occurred.

Residents said they had to go to the dam, located at the foot of Mount Talinis, to fetch water.

Officials admitted the local government does not have enough funds to finance the repair of the pipes.

“A day after the landslide we immediately went to the landslide area and made repairs on some of the damaged pipes,” Vicente Elcoriza, Bacong municipal planning and development engineer, said.

Elcoriza urged government officials to help their municipality in restoring the water system.

Elcoriza said the waterless villages in Bacong are Timbaga, Bontod, Dul-dol, Buntis, Kalamgay, Lutaw and Cumbado.

Six villages in Dauin town are also affected by the damaged pipes. These are Tugawe, Magsaysay, Lipayo, Bulak, Mag-aso and Libho.

Some of the residents have to buy water for P10-P15 per five-gallon container.

“Before, our water is free, but now we need to buy water for P15.00,” a local told ABS-CBN.

Kabulakan Festival Dumaguete City

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Last week was the anulual Kabulakan Festival in Dumaguete City. The Flower Festival was at the Central Quezon Park. Countless activities a lot of food and fantastic weather formed the basement for this wonderful Festival. The Highlight was the Parade on Saturday.
A 1 hour colorful parade rolled through Dumaguete City with Percussion Groups, Dance performances and wagons with Celebreties. As I am not familiar with all the Pinoy - TV and Movie Stars i just recognized that they are famous when all the people around me started screaming and shouting at like bitten by a wild Karabow. I felt like back home 15 years aro when I was touring as a sound-tec with Backstreet-Boys…

When the Parade reached the last quarter and came along the Boulevard it started to rain. Even in that conditions the dancers and perussion Groups continued their performanve and the audience was excited. It all ended in a 30 minute mega fireworks at the waterfront in Dumaguete City.

I can’t wait for the next Parade and to join the happy people of Dumaguete with their celebrations. Even the people here are not rich, they are happy. I love to be here in this wonderful country.

Verde Island Passage: Centre of Centre of Marine Biodiversity

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

While doing some research for my diving-page Philippinen-tauchen.com  I came across a nice article about Verde Island on CDNN and I thought I should share it with you. Here is a part of it…

PUERTO GALERA, Philippines – Verde Island Passage south of Manila has been described as the “centre of the centre” of the world’s marine biodiversity in a joint study by America’s Smithsonian Institute.

Beneath the turquoise waves that funnel nutrients from the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea are spectacular reef formations of more than 300 species of coral and underwater rock canyons that host nearly 60 percent of the world’s known shorefish species.

“This area can be considered the marine counterpart to the Amazon River basin,” said Kent Carpenter of the World Conservation Union, co-author of the study which put the passage at the peak of the “Coral Triangle” that spans the Sulawesi and the Sulu Seas in the southern Philippines and nearby Indonesia….

The only thing I don’t like is the last part as it is just promotion for a dive-shop, but the rest is a interesting read.

cheers
